The "Understanding" Progression

When we think about children and the path they take in learning, and coming into their own in the world, there are some interesting things that happen along the way. Do you recall a time early in the life of a child close to you where they think you know everything, and they are amazed by who you are? Like, “how do you still remember how to do this math” or “it seems like you know everything.” Aah, the magical era. And then… and then they reach the age when all the sudden the information of the world is transferred to them and removed from you. It seems to happen overnight when we’re sleeping, and we are often left mystified. How can they learn absolutely everything so quickly and with such confidence and certainty? (Take a moment to reminisce about your own personal experiences). I wonder how often the phrase “move out now while you still know everything” has been said throughout history. But later, as time goes by, there is somewhat of a return to what once was but also combined with balance and emotional maturity. Not necessarily an awe of their parents anymore but a mutual appreciation and respect for what has been done, the road paved for them, and the feeling that things are coming full circle. While this exact scenario may not play out exactly in every family, I think we could agree it tends to be a common theme in our lives.

As I thought about the above story, I realized that it drew a remarkable resemblance to my journey in this business. When I first graduated from college, and was about to enter the wealth management business, I was completely stunned by how much there was to know and learn about finance, economics, markets, the world economy, marketing, sales, etc. I was fortunate to be surrounded by many smart people and couldn’t believe how they could have learned all they did. I was grateful. But then, I started to learn the ropes, got the licenses I needed to enter business and began to get comfortable with things. And just like that, I had all the knowledge required to go out and take over the world. Lol. All I needed was people to share my story with and success would be mine. However, over time, I realized through quite a bit of blood and scars that there will always be much more to learn, those who took the time to get me where I am is a true blessing, and the key to success is a delicate balance between perseverance, doing the right thing, gratefulness, and service to others. After almost 35 years, it’s a nice place to be. This industry is something I highly respect, as it is truly one of the most complicated ecosystems ever developed.

There are many things in life that end up being dichotomies as time goes on. Many of them have to do with the maturity that life brings as we age. As it relates to the service we provide you, our wonderful clients, we hope that each day we bring a well-balanced approach that provides the opportunity for solid trust, an enduring relationship, knowledge that makes a difference in your lives, and a seasoned culmination of life experience. We’re the best we’ve ever been right now, and that makes me happy.
